The Motorcycle Diaries is a story of living life with fullness; knowing that Ernesto would become the legendary Che, leader of the Cuban Revolution, isn't as important as witnessing the world views of two friends change after leaving familiarity and comfort behind in the oily exhaust cloud of La Poderosa. Their impassioned spirits open the road for the adventurers as they two-wheel their way through Patagonia, Chile, Peru's Machu Picchu, the Amazon River and Venezuela. Famed Argentinean composer Gustavo Santoalalla's beautiful score is both dreamy and rugged, and always flavorfully rhythmic as it draws on the rich treasures of Latin music. The Latin influence is expectedly traditional, but this is Santoalalla... the music is modernly orchestrated. On the Motorcycle Diaries soundtrack CD (Deutsche Grammophon), we hear a fusion of jazz and rock elements driven by African drums and Latin rhythms. This difficult fusion is beautifully mastered by the composer and works wonders for the film, capturing the wild sentiments embraced by the colleagues on their journey.
