Quote of the Moment Poo-Bum: hey, my breasts are fine thank you very much, they didn't need to be augumented. 7 October 2004 One of our own? - Simon A post from Jenza over in Open Discussion suggests that Blair Harvey, the man beaten to death by drunken teenagers in Auckland this week, was in fact Matador (a.k.a. Grunt), a Quaker known to many of us. Even if there's been an identity mixup, it's still very sad. End of an era - Simon It's gone. DOOM 3 v1.1 patch, Linux binaries released - Simon id Software has released the first post-launch patch for DOOM 3, taking it to version 1.1. Among all the expected bugfixes is one that many people have been waiting for: "Fixed issue when switching between flashlight and previous weapon after using the PDA". Also released by the boys from Texas are Linux binaries for v1.1, eeeexcellent. Get all the info on the Linux port here. Download the files from... hell, I don't know. All the usual places? The primary site is, of course, the doom3 directory on ftp.idsoftware.com. 6 October 2004 PHL time again - Simon The latest PenthouseLAN will be taking place on the 16th of this month at, you guessed it, Lanplace in Wellington. Get all the info you need at phl.paradise.net.nz and natter beforehand over here. 3 September 2004 FFA15 goes CTF - Simon Dal writes in with news for you Q3Aers... FFA 15, normally a freeze comp but this time trying Q3CTF. This will be a 1 day 4x4 Q3CTF tourney held on Sunday Sept 19. These have been great fun using Freeze Tag, and will be just as much fun or more with CTF. So old players dust off your rockets, not so old wash your nappies, and everyone else find 3 mates and go sign up at ffa.net.nz. 2 August 2004 DOOM forum finally arrives - Simon Yeah, OK, it's up :) 1 August 2004 PhoenixLAN in Auckland - Simon Campbell Long writes in with news of phoenixLAN taking place in Auckland this coming weekend: PCTronix Ltd 172 Trafalgar St (Cnr of Trafalgar St & Onehunga Mall) Onehunga When: 7th Aug 12:00PM - 8th Aug 4:00PM Cost: $20 Prepay on site (last date for payement has been extended until Wed 4th August) Network: 1000Mbit with 2000Mbit backbone For more info, check out www.phoenixlan.co.nz. 16 July 2004 DOOM3 goes gold - Simon Yes, it finally happened. No, not an update to the news -- well, I mean, yes, that too, but the biggie -- DOOM3 has gone gold and will soon be rolling off the presses. From Todd Hollenshead: Yes, this is the official word that DOOM 3 has been code released and has been approved for manufacturing! It won't be long now until the anticipation ends and the PH34R begins ;-) We literally just hung up with Activision and have confirmed that our latest release candidate has been mutually approved and is finally GOLD. Thanks to everyone for their patience (yeah right! =) and for everyone at id, Activision and our numerous partners for helping us create what I believe is absolutely the best game we have ever made. Well... cool! Damn, now I need to buy a new PC. 14 April 2004 XLAN in Auckland - Simon Dee-Zilla wishes everyone to know about this event coming up in Auckland on Labour weekend: Start: 23rd October 12pm Finish: 25th October 2pm Price: $60 prepay, $65 door sale Place: Alexandra Park Raceway, Greenlane Amount: 600 people Prizes: Cash Prizes and more to be announced Get more info at www.xlan.co.nz. 13 February 2004 Quake City LAN in the Quake City - chiQ My old hometown of Napier is playing host to its first major LAN later in the year. Napier's a lovely place, and the venue rocks. Here's more from the horse's mouth: Quake City Lan, Easter 2004, NAPIER! We are holding a 100 seat lan event with tournaments in Napier between 4pm Friday April 9th (Good Friday) and 4pm Sunday April 11th. This is the first sizable event that has happened in the Hawkes Bay so come and help us make it a good one. It will be held on the second floor of the historical T&G Dome Building on Marine parade and we have a nice internet connection with low pings (sub 20ms) so if no one on the lan is playing your game you can still play online. So far we will have dedicated servers for: Counter-Strike, Enemy Territory, Quake3, BF1942 For more info see our website at www.quakecity.co.nz or register directly with REGISTER FOR QCL2004!! Regards, RageX Defintely worth a look :) 7 January 2004 id Buy That For a Dollar - chiQ Well, well, well, what have we here! Tim and Todd have stepped up to the plate it seems. The news on the id software site is that Todd Hollenshead and Tim Willits are both now owners, along with Adrian Carmack, John Carmack, and Kevin Cloud. Congrats guys. 19 December 2003 Duke Nukem Forever delayed - Simon Jeffrey Lapin, CEO of DNF-publishing-rights holder Take Two Interactive, was today quoted as saying "I had a recent conversation with [Duke Nukem Forever's] developer, and they expect the game to be completed sometime at the end of '04 or the beginning of '05." Now, I know that this will disappoint... nay, CRUSH many of you out there. Your lives may seem to have ceased to have meaning. Just remember, a counsellor is only a phonecall away. Don't do anything stupid. 4 December 2003 Finals? WTF? - chiQ Spoon1 gave me the dish on yet another tourney kiwis are doing well in over in Australia at the moment. It seems that we don't need to rely on women to keep New Zealand on the world sporting map any longer! Witness The Fitness took part in the Game Arena Battlefield 1942 Ladder in Australia and though they entered the ladder late, with 5 straight wins they made it into the top 8 in time for the playoffs. The playoffs are formatted similar to the AFL, with second-chance preliminaries for the top 4 and knockout preliminaries for positions 5-8. WTF (5th) defeated Oz Forces (8th) in the Preliminaries on Aberdeen. They then beat Armchair Commandos (4th) in the Semi-finals last Sunday on Wake Island. WTF are now in the Finals, where Freedom Riders play Lex Talionis and WTF play 6 Pack for a place in the Grand Final. The game is scheduled for Sunday 7th Dec, 11.30pm NZT. Results of previous WTF games are available here. wtf. Spoon1 Yet again a kiwi side is fighting its way up from a late start. Please wish WTF the best of luck and cheer them on this weekend. This is a matter of national pride. 3 December 2003 Kiwis Take Australian RA3 Championship - chiQ Kidona let me know about this. I didn't know it was even on, which is a bit sad. The AusRA3 league site has all the official information, but Kid's summary goes like this: KTP have won the Australian Quake3 Rocket Arena competition by beating clan DV in the Grand Final 2 maps to 1 the night before last. The competition was a great success with 13 of Australias top RA3 clans all participating. KTP entered the tournament half way through the season cemented near the bottom of the table and had to win all their remaining pool games just to make the top 4 in their division due to entering late. They qualified 4th and then had to win all their playoff games to avoid instant elimination which they managed to do convincingly. The KTP team was Kidona, Evil, Twinsen, MK, Slaughter, Jay, UL, TG1 & Sooperman….Brad’r aka Striker was riding the glory. On the whole a very impressive effort from KTP. Nice job guys! 18 November 2003 NZGames.com turns 7 - Simon I almost forgot... seven years today. Yikes. Birthday wishes here :) Telecom upgrades hurting gamers - Simon From the NZ Herald: Online gamers using Telecom's entry-level Jetstream Starter connection are venting about a hardware upgrade that is threatening to end happy days of simultaneous web surfing or file downloading during game play. As part of its move to a "next generation network" Telecom is replacing its mix of largely Nokia branded routers with equipment from Juniper Networks. The new routers more effectively handle internet traffic by queueing packets of data that cannot be sent through in one go due to the limited size of the internet connection at the receiver's end. But online gamers are now experiencing major delays. Although Telecom's internet provider, Xtra, claims the change means better connection performance for web surfers and downloaders, those sharing their internet connection across multiple PCs and online gamers in particular may experience degraded performance. Discussion of this issue is going on, among other places, in this thread. 7 November 2003 DOOM 3 release date still unknown - Simon Just got my hands on Activision's release schedule for all games coming out from Nov 2003 to March 2004, and DOOM 3 ain't in the list... that is all... 5 November 2003 Wireless Treasure Hunt - LordP A word from Noodles about an event he's helping to plan, involving wireless and treasure (Scott: What are you two doing? T+P: Looking for treasure!)... Anyway, here's the scoop.. On Sunday the 7th of December 2003, NZWireless.org is holding the first of what we hope will be many wireless events in Auckland. The first event will be a wireless version of a treasure hunt, where groups of people will have to “war drive” to find hidden access points. Each access point will have a clue that points to the next access point. The first group who completes the hunt will win a prize (to be announced). The ...
