Off the field is where it got him in trouble. The 1996 National League MVP, who later admitted using steroids during his major league career, died Sunday. He was 41. Caminiti died of a heart attack in the Bronx, said his agent-lawyer Rick Licht. The city medical examiner's office performed an autopsy Monday but could not rule on a cause of death until toxicology tests were complete, spokeswoman Ellen Borakove said. That process could take as long as 10 days. "What we all loved about Cammy was his devotion to the game and his desire for the game," said one of his former coaches, Houston manager Phil Garner. "But it went into uncontrollable levels with no discipline." [FULL STORY] Matthews on NFL Week 5 October 9, 2004 at 10:58 PM It hasn't been home sweet home so far this NFL season. Home teams were a dismal 12-16 the past two weeks and are only 31-29 this season. Home teams have fared even worse in the point-spread standings with a costly 23-35-2 record against the Las Vegas line. "Best Bets" is starving for a big week and hoping for some home cooking. Last week, there were only four home favorites. There are 11 this week. Indianapolis is 22-40 against the spread (ATS) as a home favorite since 1992 but figures to improve that number the longer Peyton Manning plays. The most significant fact for Colts bettors this season is that they're 4-0 ATS. The Colts are favored by 9 points at home Sunday and figure to roll over the declining Raiders as this week's "Best Bet:" INDIANAPOLIS 30, Oakland 13. [FULL STORY] Lewis pleads guilty... October 7, 2004 at 8:19 PM Baltimore Ravens running back Jamal Lewis pleaded guilty Thursday to using a cell phone to violate federal law by trying to set up a drug transaction more than four years ago. Under an agreement with prosecutors, Lewis, 25, will be sentenced to four months in federal prison and two months in a halfway house. No immediate sentencing date was set. He also must complete 500 hours of community service. Prosecutors said it could be 60 days or more before Lewis is sentenced. "I believe it probably is in the best interest of both sides," U.S. District Judge Orinda Evans said in accepting the plea. [FULL STORY] She must be identified.... October 6, 2004 at 10:08 PM A federal judge on Wednesday rejected a request from the woman accusing Kobe Bryant of rape to remain anonymous in her civil lawsuit against the NBA star, saying the public's interest in open court proceedings outweighs her desire to shield her identity. "The parties appear as equals before the court and that fundamental principle must be protected throughout these proceedings," U.S. District Judge Richard Matsch said. He said allowing the woman to remain anonymous could be misconstrued as a prejudgement in her favor. Attorneys for the 20-year-old woman had asked Matsch to protect her identity, saying she has been the subject of death threats and sordid publicity for more than a year. At least two men have been prosecuted for allegedly threatening to kill the woman, or saying they would kill her for money. [FULL STORY] Pippen Retires.. October 5, 2004 at 8:27 PM After 17 years, I got all the basketball out of me I possibly could," Pippen said. "This was a very difficult decision for me to retire from playing a game that has been such a great part of my life." Pippen, 39, chosen one of the NBA's 50 greatest players in 1996 for the league's 50th anniversary, was the sidekick to Michael Jordan during the Bulls' run of dominance in the 1990s. Known for his all-around play, especially his defense against some of the league's best scorers, the seven-time All-Star won titles in 1991, 1992, 1993, 1996, 1997 and 1998.. His contributions to this franchise during his tenure here have been innumerable, Bulls chairman Jerry Reinsdorf said. As an organization, we thank him for everything. [FULL STORY] Indiana to have round the clock gambling? July 9, 2003 at 11:05 PM The state's 10 riverboat casinos could get approval on Friday for offering around-the-clock gambling. The Indiana Gaming Commission also will consider staff ideas for a program that would allow problem gamblers to ban themselves from casinos. All 10 casinos have asked the commission for permission to remain open 24 hours, at least during some days of the week, commission spokeswoman Jennifer Arnold said Monday. She said agency staff members have reviewed plans submitted by the casinos and expect to recommend their approval. The new two-year state budget includes a provision that allows casinos to stay open 24 hours. Lawmakers hoped that would generate an additional $10 million a year in gambling tax revenue for the state. [FULL STORY] Canada Court Justice says government to blame... July 8, 2003 at 11:43 PM A recent Ontario court decision assigning the government partial blame for the criminal actions of an addicted gambler will clear the way for other problem gamblers to argue for lighter sentences, an Ottawa Crown attorney predicts. Ontario Court Justice Paul Bélanger refused to send former Canadian Forces employee Boyd Dulmage to jail for defrauding the government of almost $100,000. He reasoned that since governments are benefiting from the profits of casinos, they must accept some responsibility for creating problem gamblers. "It seems to me, the Canadian public benefits from gambling on a large scale now," Mr. Justice Bélanger said in his decision. [FULL STORY] NY to take on NJ ! July 7, 2003 at 2:13 PM Like Rip Van Winkle stirring from his deep sleep, the decades-long quest for casino gambling in the Catskill Mountains is finally awake and kicking. And even though the first pair of dice won't roll until 2005 at the earliest, the CEO of the company that plans to build the first of three Indian gaming halls in this land of bankrupt bungalows has already declared war on Atlantic City. "This is New York versus New Jersey, it's nothing else," said Robert Berman, who runs Empire Resorts, Inc., which has a deal with the Cayuga tribe to operate a casino on the grounds of Monticello Raceway. "Nobody in Atlantic City wants to see a casino in Sullivan County, New York, in the heart of their market...It's war." [FULL STORY] Putting SIN back in Vegas ! July 4, 2003 at 10:57 PM It's a new day or maybe night in Las Vegas, and we don't just mean the Celine Dion extravaganza at Caesars Palace. Sin is back in Sin City. The buzzword now is "adult" with a capital A. "Family Vegas is gone," said Heather Kovacs, who designed Risque, the new "ultra" lounge at Paris Casino. "Sex is back with a vengeance." "Back in 1993, Las Vegas was perceived to be redesigning itself to be appealing to families, and I think that it failed," said Jennifer Michaels, a publicist for Treasure Island casino. "Parents who brought their kids were disappointed because, at the heart of it, Las Vegas was still an adult destination. "So MGM Grand closed its theme park, and you have definitely seen a return in recent years to people focusing on Las Vegas as an adult destination with night life and nightclubs and gambling." Now, in fact, the resort casinos aren't just raising the stakes with unique and elaborate entertainment like Dion's show, which is a dazzling combination of the world's most popular songstress with the artistry of Cirque du Soleil. [FULL STORY] Borgata opens with style ! July 4, 2003 at 12:03 AM With a pinch of Vegas attitude, a slew of high-tech gadgetry and some amorous accents, the first new Atlantic City casino in 13 years opened its doors, gambling that its edgy appeal will tap into a younger, richer crowd than the low-rolling senior citizens the market is famous for. The Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa, a $1 billion play by two Nevada casino companies eager to get in on the lucrative East Coast gambling business, began taking bets just before midnight Wednesday, after keeping the opening time a secret to avoid a crush of gamblers at the doors. "Borgata, baby, Borgata!" said actor Stephen Dorff, making a ceremonial first roll of the dice at craps table No. 4, surrounded by scantily-clad Borgata Babes cocktail waitresses and Borgata executives.
